Big Changes for 2026-27
New proof of funds rule
A French decree that took effect in August 2026 changed how the minimum resources for student visas and permits are calculated. The amount is now linked to France’s minimum wage (SMIC) instead of the old fixed monthly rate that had not changed for years. It applies to new applications and renewals.
- The monthly amount you must show is now significantly higher than the figure many older websites still quote.
- Because it follows the minimum wage, the amount can change again.
- Always check the figure on France-Visas on the day you apply, and make sure your bank documents cover it for the full year, plus your tuition.
Housing aid (APL) restrictions
Self-funded international students from outside the EU are no longer eligible for housing assistance such as APL, unless they hold a recognised scholarship or meet another exception, such as working alongside their studies. Plan your rent fully from your own funds.

How to Prepare for Your Campus France Interview
- Know your program inside out: the course, the institution and why it fits your background.
- Explain why France: be ready to say why France, and not another country, suits your goals.
- Connect your past and future: show how your studies and work so far lead to this program and your career plans.
- Be clear about funding: know who is paying and how your funds meet the current requirement.
- Stay consistent: your answers, SOP, CV and EEF application should tell the same story.

Work Rights and Life After Graduation
- Part-time work: a student visa lets you work part-time within an annual hour limit set by French law.
- Internships (stages): many master’s programs include paid internships, a great way to build French work experience.
- Post-study stay: Indian master’s graduates from French institutions can stay on to look for work or start a business through a post-study permit, which can be renewed.
- Alumni visa: eligible Indian alumni with a master’s-level qualification from France can apply for a long-validity, multiple-entry short-stay Schengen visa. This is not a work permit; it is for short visits, meetings and networking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. How much bank balance is required for a France study visa?
You need the monthly living-cost minimum set by France for a full year, plus your tuition. The minimum was raised recently and is linked to the minimum wage, so always confirm the current figure on France-Visas.
Q2. Does the new funds rule apply to renewals too?
Yes. It applies to new student visa applications and to residence permit renewals submitted after the rule took effect, so continuing students should plan for it as well.
Q3. Is Campus France mandatory?
Yes. Students from India must complete the Études en France procedure and get Campus France clearance before applying for the visa.
Q4. What happens in the Campus France interview?
It is an academic discussion about your chosen program, your background, why France and your career plans. Keep your answers clear, honest and consistent with your file.
Q5. Is it too late for the Spring 2027 intake?
Not always, as some business schools and master’s programs still accept spring applications. But time is short, so start immediately or consider September 2027 as a safer target.
Q6. When should I start for September 2027?
Start now with shortlisting, language tests and financial documents, so your Campus France file and interview are done well before peak visa season.
Q7. Can I study in France without French?
Yes. Many programs are taught fully in English. Learning basic French still helps with part-time jobs, internships and daily life.
Q8. Do I need IELTS for France?
For English-taught programs, most institutions ask for IELTS, TOEFL or an equivalent. French-taught programs usually ask for DELF, DALF or TCF. Check each program’s requirement.
Q9. Can I use an education loan as proof of funds?
An education loan sanction letter is commonly accepted alongside other financial documents. Make sure the total meets the current France-Visas minimum plus your tuition.
Q10. Can I get housing aid (APL) as an international student?
Self-funded students from outside the EU are generally no longer eligible. Exceptions include recognised scholarship holders and students who work alongside their studies.
Q11. Can I work while studying in France?
Yes, part-time within the annual hour limit set by French law. Paid internships that are part of your program are also allowed.
Q12. Is there a post-study work option for Indian students?
Yes. Indian master’s graduates can stay on through a post-study permit to look for work or start a business, and it can be renewed. Check the current conditions before you graduate.
Q13. What is the long-validity alumni visa for Indians?
It is a multiple-entry, short-stay Schengen visa for eligible Indian alumni of French master’s-level programs. It is for visits, meetings and networking, not for work.
Q14. What is the VLS-TS and why must I validate it?
The VLS-TS is a long-stay visa that works as your residence permit for the first year. You must validate it online after arrival within the deadline, or you may lose your legal status.
Q15. Can I travel to other Schengen countries on my French student visa?
Yes. A valid, validated VLS-TS generally lets you travel within the Schengen area for short stays. Carry your passport and visa documents when you travel.
Q16. Why do France student visas get refused?
Common reasons include funds below the current minimum, unclear or inconsistent documents, weak links between your past studies and chosen course, and a poor Campus France interview. Strengthen your file before reapplying.
